Spirometry
Breathing should be calming, not a challenge
Spirometry is a simple test that lets your doctor measure the health and capacity of your lungs. During a spirometry test, your doctor will have you breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a tube. The machine will calculate the amount of air you inhale and exhale and assess whether your lungs are struggling at any point.
The spirometry test is used to detect anomalies in lung function such as shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing caused by chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, and other lung diseases.
Spirometry also checks the efficacy of medication and inhalers. Based on your results, your doctor may make changes to your medications if necessary.
Check for Lung Disease
Spirometry tests measure how much air you can breathe and how easily. This lets your doctor see if you have contracted any lung disease.
Simple and Non-invasive
Spirometry tests are non-invasive and done in your doctor’s office. All you need to do is blow into the machine through a mouthpiece.
Measure Progress
Your care provider will use your spirometry test results to check if your prescription medications and treatment plans are working effectively.

Frequently asked questions
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that will not restrict your breathing.
If possible, avoid using your inhaler the morning of the test. If you must use it, note the time and number of puffs and inform the clinical staff.
A standard spirometry test takes around 30 minutes.
You may have a small, light meal up to 2 hours before. Do not drink alcohol or smoke for at least 24 hours before the test.
Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 2 hours before the test as the spirometer needs to measure the function of your lungs in their normal state.
